Bricks From Plastic is focused on creating a self-managing plastic waste recycling system in Palawan. In July 2021, a center will be created in Puerto Princesa City, which will convert plastic waste into bricks and sell them to local organizations, brick suppliers and construction companies.
The plastic will be collected through two main channels. First, through donations from local businesses, which currently pay to dispose of their plastic. Second, through barangay (Tagalog word for a smaller district) collections, wherein each barangay collects plastic from the neighboring households and receive a kilo payment of rice for every ten kilos of plastic collected. The plastic goes into a three-step transformation process of sanitation, heating and mixing (with recycled sand) resulting in a robust plastic brick, stronger and lighter than cement alternatives.
With the success of the project, phase two can be initiated, including creating furniture, tiles and ecohomes, which are houses made entirely of plastic bricks, with solar energy and water vapor systems in place for electricity.
