The project focuses on promoting sustainable management of open spaces in an urban area characterised by rapid urban growth. Two levels are envisaged for this project.
Vision 1. This phase is characterised by a) raising awareness of environmental protection and campaigning for fruit tree planting in two relatively new residential area yards. Various media (print, audio, and electronic) is used for the campaign to encourage each household to plant a tree. b) Planting of indigenous fruit trees on designated open spaces and chosen school campuses. This is predominantly done by students and volunteers.
Vision 2. Establish a Permanent Community Project (PCP) for a nursery as an income-generating project, this would produce different tree seedlings for sale at competitive prices.
The projected benefits of the project are food source (fruits), enriched biodiversity, erosion control, local climate regulation, and the creation of carbon sinks. Ultimately the PCP will improve incomes for the participants.
